Our OPD sessions with staff at the University of Dundee continued with the second part of the ‘Influencing without Authority’ series. Entitled ‘Assertive Communication’, this webinar looks at the reasons why participants may have difficulties in asserting themselves at work. We look at a variety of approaches to increase their assertiveness. These include a range of psychological and communication techniques to help participants adopt helpful perspectives, and to express their needs and opinions clearly with a range of people, even in the face of resistance.
After the training, we asked the staff which part of the webinar they found the most beneficial and why. Responses included:
- “Tips for use in real life situations”
- “Examples given and the role play scenarios”
- “Importance of non-verbal communication and the “I” statement”
- “Tips for assertive communication”
- “The transactional analysis and ego states were very interesting and helpful”
Other general comments from the group included:
- “Very useful”
- “Well delivered”
- “Very interactive, even with the Zoom format”
- “Worksheets were useful”
- “I found it very useful, some tools I can really use to identify different ego states and how to converse”
